NEW YORK (Reuters) - The first generic version of Pfizer Inc's Viagra, also known as Sildenafil, was approved on Wednesday, but the Food and Drug Administration rejected it because of a low price.
The approval came just days after an independent panel found Pfizer Inc's Viagra not to be the best medicine for the treatment of heart problems. The FDA said it considered the drug to be safe and effective.
Viagra, also known as Sildenafil, is an oral prescription drug used to treat erectile dysfunction. It was approved by the FDA on June 26, 1998.
Pfizer is one of the first manufacturers of generics to approve the drug. The company has been selling the brand since 2013, when the patent on Sildenafil expired.
The FDA said it considered Viagra to be the drug's best medicine for erectile dysfunction. But Pfizer said it had not approved it for the treatment of heart disease.
